Joint or back pain? Treatment without surgery

Knee, back, neck or shoulder pain can make daily life hard. Many people get better without an operation. Dr Imran Salim Malik finds the cause first, then gives you a plan.

Send a list of your current medicines too.

How Dr Malik treats pain

For most problems he starts with treatment that does not need an operation. Your plan may include one or more of these steps.

When to see a doctor about pain
  • It lasts more than two weeks
  • It makes it hard to move
  • It started after an injury
  • It comes with numbness or tingling

Finding the cause early means it can be treated.

  1. Medicines

Painkillers that reduce swelling, and medicines that relax tight muscles. Dr Malik prescribes them and keeps a check. Tell him if you have a stomach ulcer, kidney or heart problems, or take a blood thinner. Please don’t add other painkillers from the chemist without asking him.

  2. Physiotherapy and exercise

Guided exercises strengthen the muscles around the joint and reduce stiffness.

  3. Pain injections

An injection into the painful joint or near the nerve that causes the pain. It can be a steroid, which calms swelling, or a nerve block, which numbs the pain. Dr Malik first checks that it suits you. If you have diabetes, tell him first.

  4. Posture and daily habits

How to sit, walk and manage your weight, to reduce strain and help stop pain coming back.

Common questions

Which problems does Dr Malik treat?

Arthritis, low back pain, neck pain, disc problems, frozen shoulder, fractures and ankle pain. Also pain from tendon injuries, knee problems and recovery after surgery.

Can my pain be treated without surgery?

Often, yes. Options include injections, physiotherapy and, for some problems, PRP (an injection made from your own blood). How well PRP works varies, and Dr Malik discusses this with you first.

What happens at the first visit?

Dr Malik asks about your pain and examines you. He looks at your X-ray or MRI, explains the cause and gives you a plan, with the cost of each step. Bring your reports and a list of your medicines.

Are injections safe?

Yes, they are generally safe. Some people have a little more pain for a day or two afterwards, and infection is rare. To keep you safe, Dr Malik gives only a few steroid injections into the same joint each year. If you have diabetes, tell him first, because a steroid injection can raise blood sugar for a few days.

How much does treatment cost?

The consultation fee depends on the hospital you visit, and we tell you the exact fee on WhatsApp before you book. A follow-up visit within 5 days of your first consultation is free to go through your reports and scans. The total depends on your treatment and how many sessions you need. Ask about the cost of any treatment before you start.

Been told you need surgery? You can often try other treatment first. Ask us on WhatsApp.
