Do you need a new hip yet?

Not every painful hip needs an operation. Dr Malik examines the hip and the X-ray first, then advises the right step for you.

What Dr Malik may advise first

  • The right pain medicines
  • Physiotherapy to keep the hip moving and strong

When he may advise a new hip

  • Medicines and physiotherapy no longer help
  • Severe hip arthritis
  • Some broken hips, often in older people

Not sure yet? WhatsApp the hip X-ray to book a consultation. Dr Malik will examine you before advising on surgery.

Which hip replacement?

Hip replacement is not one single operation. The right type depends on the problem, the bone quality and the patient’s health. Dr Malik will explain which suits you.

Total hip replacement

Both parts of the joint are replaced: the socket and the ball at the top of the thigh bone. The standard treatment for severe hip arthritis.

Bipolar (half) replacement

Only the ball is replaced, with a two-part implant, and your own socket is kept. Used for some broken hips (femoral neck fractures), mostly in older patients.

Minimally invasive total replacement

A total hip replacement through a smaller cut, so less muscle is disturbed. Dr Malik will tell you if it suits you.

Walking again, step by step

After a planned total hip replacement, a typical path. After a broken hip, recovery depends a lot on health before the fall.

The early weeks at home
  • Avoid low seats, squatting and sitting cross-legged on the floor
  • Use a raised toilet seat or commode
  • Pray seated on a chair at first

Blood-thinning medicine may be given for some weeks: take it exactly as prescribed.

Stop smoking and all tobacco, including naswar. It slows bone and wound healing.

  1. Same day or next day

First steps with a walker, with the physiotherapist.

  2. First few weeks

A walker, then a walking stick.

  3. Around 4 to 6 weeks

Many people walk without an aid.

  4. Driving

Usually after about 8 weeks, and only when Dr Malik agrees. You must also be off strong painkillers.

Questions families ask about hip replacement

How much does it cost?

We tell you the consultation fee on WhatsApp before you book, so there are no surprises. A follow-up visit within 5 days of your first consultation is free to go through your reports and scans.

The cost of surgery depends on the operation, the implant, the room and the nights in hospital. It is explained to you before you decide.

How long will my parent be in hospital?

Dr Malik will tell you how long your parent is likely to stay. They are helped to get up and moving as soon as it is safe.

Is it safe for an older parent with heart or sugar problems?

Age alone does not rule it out. Before surgery, general health is checked, including the heart and blood sugar. Do not stop any blood thinner or heart medicine on your own: Dr Malik and your heart doctor will tell you what to do.

Dr Malik explains the risks to the family before you decide.

What are the risks?

Like any operation, a hip replacement has risks. The main ones are infection, blood clots, the hip slipping out of place (dislocation), and one leg feeling slightly longer than the other. Less often, a nerve or blood vessel is injured, the bone near the implant breaks, or the hip stays stiff or painful. Over the years the implant can wear or loosen, and another operation may be needed.

What is the 90-degree rule?

After some hip replacements, you are asked not to bend the hip more than 90 degrees for a while. This lowers the risk of the hip slipping out of place while it heals. Dr Malik and your physiotherapist will tell you if it applies to you, and when it is safe to stop.

How long does a new hip last?

In large joint registries, about 9 in 10 total hip replacements are still working after 15 years, and nearly 6 in 10 after 25 years. It also depends on activity, weight and general health.

Is there an age limit?

There is no fixed age limit. Most patients are between 50 and 80 years old, and younger or older people can also have surgery.
